The 30 year old ethnic war and the unexpected, unmerciful tsunami have produced several thousands of young widows between the ages of 18—35. Some are young as 14 years of age. Since they don’t have proper skills to earn their living they either depend on someone else or fall prey to someone who take advantage of them. They have became a silent group.
The Dorcas house is established to provide a safe environment, skill training, spiritual counselling and help them to live with dignity in the society. Once the training is completed they are given cash assistance or necessary tools for them to begin their life with hope. Our aim is to put a smile on the face of a widow permanently.
Jeyanthini got married at the age of 14 in order to protect her 18 year old husband being taken by the armed groups for compulsory military training. But eventually she could not achieved her purpose because unidentified gunmen killed her husband while she was carrying his baby in her womb in the year 2006. Jeyanthini became a widow at the age of 15 with a child. A young girl who should have enjoyed her life and studies became a widow, being affected by tsunami and again by this tragedy. The Foursquare Church pastors met her in her pathetic situation and founded the Dorcas house to help young widows like Jeyanthini. |
